A 2025 Kwanza Reflection on Self-Determination
2025? Um its 2026 and ’bout to be 2027 in a minute.
But I didn’t honor my 2025 Kwanza year and I Am committed so here we go!
After much deliberation, I realized that this train of life is never going to stop so I can catch up. Every time it slows down, it just slows down; it doesn’t stop. So I learned to meet my goals REGARDLESS of whatever is happening in my life. This late 2025 reflection was supposed to happen in January, in February, in March, in June, in July, and now here we are in September and its still not done. What exactly took so long? I had notes – I don’t know where they went. I made new notes and they got lost in the abundance of other notes. A simple video – if shot live – would have probably taken no more than 20 minutes and it would have been done. And I had a million ’20 minutes’ over this past year. I spent much of it going around in circles, waiting for life events to unfold in the way that I expected them to unfold and when they didn’t, –freezing- as if I couldn’t move on until that one thing happened first. Why is the simplest thing the hardest? Let’s Explore:
The Simplest Thing Is The Hardest
This year I’m “Fixing My Foundation” which is a gradual reinstallation of the fundamental priorities that have always sustained me, but in recent years I’ve fallen behind on. Organized home admin duties, an organized home, a daily stretch and exercise practice, weekly chores, weekly beauty routines, a wake time, a sleep time…these are all basics that I never E V A struggled with. I mean ever in life since I was kid. There’s an intentional reason why I got up at 6am when I was a kid and it wasn’t to watch Shirley and Lambchop on Channel 2, which was the only kids show on at that hour. I realized that sleeping late cut into my day’s activities and before I knew it, it was dark again and my day was gone, all because I slept through half of it. So, the decision to wake up every morning at 6am goes back to like age 8 or 9. The decision to go to sleep at 10pm was also intentional. That was established sometime during 8th grade because 10pm to 6am is exactly 8 hours of sleep and that was the proposed perfect amount of sleep for most people. I was also an organized and dedicated academic student with a calendar and a focus in life. My Focus was to move away from the ghetto, to live around grass and trees and to make a comfortable life for myself. So I led a life – by my design – that was both intentional and practical. It served me well. And as I grew and moved around in the world and noted people who did not do those things, I never envied them. I always thought my way was better because it allowed me to keep pace with a busy schedule and not look haggard and not be overwhelmed…that is until the mid years of life when I quit my very practical job and embarked on a whole entirely new journey that really shook me up, Shook Me All Night Long…And I’m now in RECOVERY MODE by Reinstating the good habits of care and keeping of the home so that I can BREATHE AGAIN. I cannot operate happily in a mess. It’s just not me. So the simplest things became the hardest things by being unorganized and not clearly focused.
Readjusting to Life in the ‘Real World’
Tax Season in August? Yes, because its SHOW UP Time. So I just did 2024 taxes because my old fafsa expired and I was dropped from the upcoming semester with the option to pay. but who wants to pay when its supposed to be free? Payment plans are optional – but not for me. So I dug up my old calendars (2024 and 2025) because I keep detailed records of my business, however they are supposed to be in a format that is mailable to the IRS. So I had to go thru the entire year, day-by-day, to make that happen…you could say I was a little behind. But it got done. Because I love money, Money Loves Me and the Feds told late filers a few years ago ‘Either file your taxes or thanks for the gift. From now on, Ya got 2 years’. Well!! All good things must come to an end. So I got the steppin for the aforementioned motivational reasons and got it done “Better Late Than Never”.
SHOWING UP
Showing Up is REDEFINING what is important in life and then DOING that thing. Of course, at the dawn of civilization people understood what was important in life – Family, Food, Home, and Fun – but after being convinced to only work on other peoples’ dreams, we created a dysfunctional social system that does not serve the majority of the people.
So in establishing a clear outline of what IS important in life, I rediscovered myself. Because I used to know, but then I got off balance. So, getting back on the horse I discovered the “why” of why many people are off balance. Because we forgot what goes into a happy life. It’s the simplest of things, that is connecting with people, expressing our love, enjoying a tree, watching the birds, being ourselves, teaching others what we know, allowing ourselves to be ‘footloose and fancy free’, to ‘go with the flow’, to ‘take life as it comes’. Somewhere along the line this was replaced with expressions like ‘you can’t win for trying’ and the ‘rat race’ and ‘it’s a cruel, cruel world’ and its a ‘dog-eat-dog world’. Interesting how such popular phrases are born of two very different schools of thought that have very different outcomes. As I’m Relearning good habits that serve me well, I am glad I can clearly define these as a FOUNDATION for managing life in a civil setting. Better Late Than Never.
The Simplest Thing Is the Hardest…How to Go Nowhere, Really Fast!
The simplest things are the hardest because we make far too much of them. We attach too much pressure on ourselves and that creates stress and overwhelm, which creates stagnation, which creates frustration, which creates stagnation, which creates frustration, which creates….yes, it’s a vicious cycle. You just got to stick your foot out, place it on the ground and get off this crazy ride to nowhere. For example, I have max data issues on all of my devices, I spend hours trying to get the data off with not much progress, or some data comes off but not enough to create a new video and through a series of excuses and device issues and whatever— it doesn’t get done. And I’ll tell myself to wait until I’m organized and wait until I have time (which never happens) or wait until the “right” time. But when IS the right time? I discovered the right time, is RIGHT NOW. I mean by the time I write this blog and make this video it will be kwanza again, sooo…EVERYTHING IS PUSHED TO THE BACK, EVERYTHING IS PUSHED TO THE SIDE AND IM POSTIN’ THIS VIDEO AND IM MAKIN’ THIS BLOG – MAINLY BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO WASTE THIS GREAT TITLE! –BUT THAT’S BESIDES THE POINT!!! FOCUSED.DELIBERATE.INTENTION.
The simplest thing seems too simple; it’s too easy. We are often subconsciously stuck in a cycle of control where if it doesn’t show up in the way we thought it should, we give up and don’t know what to do next. Guess I’ll just scroll and waste time until it becomes abundantly clear (again) that I should make a different choice.
We are really, really attached to sameness, to familiarly, to predictability and when life doesn’t present what was expected – which happens – our old traumas are reignited and it creates a spiral of confusion, refusal to move forward, regression and backsliding, and overwhelm as life keeps going but we are stuck in the past.
STUCK IN THE PAST
At the moment when it is understood that events unfolded however they unfolded – even if it was not what I expected – I can move on. Instead, this year I was a day late and a Kwanzaa short…but is it really too late? Is it?
I’m of the sort that the only time it’s ever too late, is after you die.
I’m reminded of the most important things in life – and that is our relationships with each other. I would say “family” which for many of us could be a positive thing, but truthfully every family is simply not going to embody the support and love that a person may need to thrive. Which means you might be one of those people, in whom it becomes immensely important, that you ravenously love yourself so that the most important relationship you have with anyone is with yourself first. From that point, you can then select members outside of yourself who will be uplifting and loving and kind and supportive. But you cannot do that if you don’t have a really good foundational relationship with YOU.
When the simplest thing is the hardest: Recognize that it is not inherently difficult, just your mental perception of it is. Decide that it WILL get done. And then Baby Steps. One week I looked for my old calendars. Another week I located my manual logbook. Another week I put the two together and for several weeks I worked on the project until finally the income and expense logs for 2024 were complete. That was Step 1. Done. Step 2: Log into Turbo Tax. One week I did that but it was closed because its no longer 2024 so I decided to go with a free one instead! Another week: I got the ball rolling and after several weeks of technical delays and research because I do my own taxes, they were done. Yaaah! That was Step 2. I was tired so I needed a break. Next week is Step 3: Log into Fafsa and input my information. I did that, but more technical delays. Turns out I had the honor and the privilege of being ‘specially selected’ to waste my time by putting my Fafsa on hold so I could go down to the school to give them a bunch of useless paperwork like “A Statement of Purpose” so that they could finish the process. I went to the school to say that I mean really, I’m so close to finishing. I literally have one class left. Yall didn’t let me in in the spring (I cant even remember why), it wasn’t offered in the summer and they responded something about the special selection for the last semester. And I responded, ‘No, not last “semester” last CLASS. I mean I started taking classes in 2017, can yall let me finish?!!! Nah, ’cause we need that Statement of Purpose and all the other stuff that’s already in the Fafsa—Except this is on our special letterhead, so this is our copy.
<Cheeks sucked in>
Okay. Could we expedite this process because school starts in one month and there is one spot left.
We can’t guarantee that.
<Sigh> Alright, I’ll just prepare myself to possibly take this class next Spring.
Not so fast — we need a copy of your license. And it can’t be expired.
Oh of course! Of course! Because the school ID you issued me and the fact that I have only one class left is just simply not enough. I completely understand. I mean, I could be anybody. I’m sure all kinds of sneaky and devious characters slither their way into college institutions to sit through Research Methods of Psychology. I know how in demand that class is. Here is my precious UNEXPIRED license as requested. God forbid its expired because if the license is expired, then my ability to read must expire with it.
So SINCE that was the case I just prepared myself to maybe not finish this year. Maybe the Universe just wanted me to make it an even 10 years. And who knows, if I go into the next semester, maybe the teacher will be tall and handsome so it would all be worth it in the end. Yes, lately, every time there’s a delay I believe its because there is some tall, handsome man waiting at the end of the delay and it will all be worth it. Perhaps its time to start dating again…Actually, you never really know what God has in store for you and I have discovered that when you ask Jesus to Take the Wheel, he has a better purview than you do, so just go with the flow, remember God is really in control so go on and do one of the other million things on your to do list…AND JUST CHECK BACK EVERY SINGLE DAY AND NIGHT TO SEE IF THEY PROCESS IT, the lady reminded me. Oh Yes, of course, of course. I have nothing better to do than to hug up on the school email twice a day. Its not possible for them to CALL me to tell me its completed although they absolutely need have my phone number.
Aaaah man makes plans and God laughs…
I’m learning patience, discipline [Another VOW to maintain my tax records Monthly so I don’t have this problem next year!!!!, Appreciation for coming this far and for being at the threshold…
So is it a day late and a Kwanza short or is it better late than never?
Your Perspective is the Only One that Ever Matters.
I think…I’m Right On Time
Despite what people are telling you all over the internet or even in real life,
You don’t need to glow up
You don’t need to grow up
You don’t need to blow up
In Life, You just need to SHOW UP!
